SEATAC, Wash. (AP) — A jury has awarded $40 million to a ground crew worker who was severely injured while working at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

KOMO-TV of Seattle reports (http://is.gd/qrFRa4) that Brandon Afoa of Puyallup, Washington, was operating an industrial tug used to push back airplanes when the brakes and steering failed. He crashed into a luggage lift, crushing his spine.

The 2007 accident left Afoa unable to use his legs or his right arm.

He sued the Port of Seattle, which owns and operates the airport, in King County Superior Court, saying it failed to maintain a safe workplace.

In a statement, the Port of Seattle expressed its sympathies to Afoa for the accident. The agency says it’s reviewing the decision.

The jury awarded the judgment on Tuesday.
